In 2025, we launched the RE Global Rankings project as a collaboration between RE Australia and other RE Groups assessing and ranking economics curricula at universities across Australia, Africa and Asia.

Our 2026 report reviewed the flagship economics courses at Australia’s nine largest universities. This research was made possible through a combination of international and local funding, which allows us to provide a research stipend to each member of the research team and subsidise travel and accommodation for the report launch event in Sydney. We take inspiration from the 1970s dispute regarding the economics curriculum at the University of Sydney and see our efforts as a continuation of this legacy on a global scale (See the 2025 update video and images below).

If you are a present or past student of a university in Australia, Africa or Asia and would like to contribute to the next report by reviewing an economics or related degree, please reach out through the ‘contact’ page and use this article, and the above report, to familiarise yourself with our project. Training will be provided and you do not require previous research experience to participate. We look forward to hearing from you.

The RE Global Challenge runs 5 short videos produced by RE groups from around the globe and published over a period of 5 days. In each video, a rethinker summarised a concept or school of thought with which they are familiar.

The 2026 round is now open, if you are interested in submitting a short video on your favourite topic, get in touch through the contact page.

In 2025, RE Philippines (also known as Ekonsepto), started by highlighting the importance of insights from the Global South. They linked to the next video by RE Australia, talking about ‘complexity political economy’. Next up was RE Zambia talking about creative destruction, RE Africa explaining how RE can act as the discipline’s hearing aid, and finally RE Kerala (also known as KN Raj Economics Club) discussed Austrian Economics.

The RE Global Conference will run for the first time in 2026. This will be an annual online event where many RE groups from across the globe will have an opportunity to present or host a speaker of their choice. Similar to the Global Challenge, recorded sessions may be posted on the various social media handles of the organisations that are part of the conference and linked to the RE Global Conference page. If you are interested in being part of this project, please reach out through the ‘contact’ page.
